Fireworks regulations
The Town of Milton Council has passed a by-law regulating the sale, storage, display and discharge of fireworks within the community. The sale and use of fireworks is closely regulated by By-law #37-2009.
Natural Resources Canada has prepared an interesting and informative Consumer Fireworks Retail Package which includes a wealth of information, tips and advice for the general public.
Sale of Family Fireworks
The new by-law requires retailers to obtain a temporary permit from the Town to sell family fireworks on specific days of the year. The Fire Department will inspect the retail site to ensure the vendor is in compliance with building and zoning requirements, Fire Code and with the Federal Explosives Act. A permit can be obtained through the Fire Department for a fee of $65.
For more information see the Family Fireworks Vendors Guide.Discharge (Setting Off) of Family Fireworks
Anyone wishing to set off or discharge family fireworks will also need to apply for a temporary permit through the Fire Department, and will need to meet requirements such as minimum lot line distances and other safety factors that demonstrate that the display is being held in a safe manner. The use of sparklers is not considered as fireworks. There is no fee for a permit to celebrate both Victoria and Canada Day, and the new by-law allows recognition of other events for a fee of $25.
No fee dates are as follows:
- Victoria Day
- Canada Day
- The two days immediately preceding Victoria Day and Canada Day
For more information see the Family Fireworks Safety Guide.
Discharge (Setting Off) of Exhibition Fireworks
The previous practice of requiring a permit for the display of exhibition fireworks continues with a fee of $195.
